YES|Experiencing the Nature In Xindu Primary School

Oct.29.2020

On the afternoon of September the 24th, a spectacular activity of NATURAL DETECTIVE for the Roots & Shoots group was held by Ms. Zheng from Shanghai Roots & Shoots at Xindu Primary School. The course, “Experiencing the Nature”, drew bursts of laughter from the students.

In the indoor session, Mr. Zheng gave the pupils a complete and systematic introduction of plant-related knowledge from the composition of leaves to the propagation methods of flowers, fruits, seeds, bark, and tree types.

After the pupils have initially mastered some knowledge of plants, the next step was to practice in nature on campus. More than 30 members from the Roots & Shoots group would be “Little Natural Detectives”. According to the content of teaching and the requirements of “Experiencing the Nature”, the pupils went to find the corresponding plants in their school. These inconspicuous grass, leaf shapes, inflorescences, fallen leaves and even rough bark have all become the targets for students to look for and observe. In the end, students reached the initial goal and truly applied what they learned.

During the process, students also discovered insects such as ladybirds, short-headed locusts, katydids, and cup-spotted locusts accidentally. In addition to bringing surprises and laughter to the children, it also sown the seeds of curiosity and hope for the Roots & Shoots group’s future learning of insect knowledge and the project-style “Experiencing the Nature” on campus.
