2013 YES Mentor Party in Chongming

Dec.23.2013

On December 23rd, the cloudy weather cleared up. 18 YES volunteers took the bus to the beautiful Chongming island for this semester’s volunteer wrap-up party.

The volunteer wrap-up party is not only a summary of environmental education courses that have taken place over the last six months, but also an opportunity to learn. Chongming is where the Yangtze River flows into the ocean. Because of Chongming’s geographical location, many birds perch here while migrating from the Siberia to Australia. After a brief stop, many volunteers spotted birds with the help of binoculars.

The volunteers ate lunch in the activity center of Dream Land. Zhang Lv, the head of Dream Land, explained that all of the ingredients of all the dishes on the table were just picked from the farm and extremely fresh. The participants ate and chatted; Zhang Lv, meanwhile, told the stories behind each species of vegetable.

During the afternoon’s wrap-up party, Frank listed the program’s statistics and shared the feedback from teachers and volunteers. Cheng Banglu, Lu Zhen, Zhang Yijie, Xu Jiawei and many other volunteers spoke to the audience about their teaching experience—the playful children often rendered the volunteers speechless. Questions such as “Do you have a girlfriend?” made Cheng Banglu’s first encounter with the children rather hard to handle. Lu Zheng, on the other hand, focused on the technical aspects of teaching. He said that tapes worked better than 502, and that when teachers separate children into groups they needed to consider the distribution of strengths among the group members. “Playing and studying with 20 little devils” is the story of Zhang Yijie, a volunteer at Jinglu Elementary School: A role play of a typical class triggered hearty laughter and strong empathy. Xu Jiawei, an experienced volunteer, spoke from the perspective of a “veteran” volunteer and contrasted two classes he taught over 2 years.

YES志愿者崇明总结派对1

To break it down, the YES Program wrap-up party is the sound of Grandma sharing the secrets to living long and prospering, the scent of the vanilla tea in your hands, and the warmth of the winter sun tickling your face. Such a party is most desirable for any volunteer. In the coming years, Roots and Shoots will also open up and hear from more volunteers, so that the YES and OG programs will grow more and more successful.
