EVENT DETAILS:
On May 15th,8 members from our union went to the Shanghai R&S office to volunteer. Our union is a part of the Home of Hope Project and are trying to help the CML&GIST patients. Our main job was to send the R&S quarterlies, which included the most recent information on the project and CML/GIST, to patients throughout the country. We divided our preparation with the boys in charge of carrying and the girls in charge of cleaning. Each section was divided in order for the work to be completed faster.
When thousands of quarterlies arrived, we finally began our main job. First, the project leader, Miss Liu, told us about the different types of quarterlies and the requirements of sending them, including ten patients with special considerations. Then, the leader of the union, Sissi Liu, explained the procedure. Gu and Gan decided to cut addresses of the R&S. While one placed the patient’s address in the center of the envelope, the other separated the address of the R&S and put it on the left bottom corner. Finally, after the envelopes were prepared, we began to put the quarterlies inside.
This activity lead to more than 1400 envelopes being sent; two-thirds belonging to the CML and the rest from GIST. Although the job was hectic, we were happy about it. Some of us even found efficient ways to stick envelopes together quickly. After three hours of fast paced work we still felt energetic. The members showed that they were highly interested in this activity. They said that although the journey was a little rough, they still wanted to take part in this volunteer activity next time. And the members who were unable to attend would also like to participate after viewing our photos.
This is the second time that we joined in the Home of Hope project. We initially chose it because we study medical science and thought it would benefit us. However, we changed our thoughts based on our experiences with this project. We feel that having a caring heart is the best requirement. For us , we are very happy about this project, and feel proud when we can actually help others!
