Volunteer’s Training Notes on Weed Management– the Use of Mulch

Advantages:

  • Inhibit the growth of weed
  • Decrease water evaporation, which of great significance in hot and dry seasons
  • Protect the soil from the scour of the rain and irrigation water to reduce soil erosion
  • Keep the soil temperature steady, so that the vegetables would not be harmed by sudden cold or heat
  • Keep the ground clean, so that our shoes would not get dirty
  • The mulch could become great fertilizer after decomposition

Materials for mulch:

hay, fallen leaves, straw, rice husk, wheat straw, tree bark, stubble of leguminous plants

Thickness:

10-15 cm and it should be fluffy (fallen leaves, hay, etc.)

Suggestion: the mulch should not touch the stem of the vegetables!
