Roots & Shoots Festival 2023: Finally, We See the Colors of Youth
Jul.3.2023
In the scorching summer of 2023, the 21st Roots & Shoots Festival was back with an offline meet-up after a three-year hiatus!
At the festival, the school groups showcased their club achievements, and our partners brought their heartfelt blessings.
School Group Booths
“Vanilla Garden” harvest from Shanghai Qingpu Senior High School:
Under the guidance of Ms. Yang Ling, the students cultivated clary, lemongrass, wormwood, peppermint, and rosemary in the school’s organic farm. They also gifted visitors with handmade hydrosol of wormwood, peppermint, or rosemary; handmade soap infused with rosemary essential oil; and various aromatic sachets made from different ingredients.
“Drifting Bottles” from Shanghai Customs College:
During the annual Double Eleven shopping extravaganza, which is also known as the express delivery festival, college students contribute quite a lot. Therefore, students from Shanghai Customs College used recyclable parcel boxes to exchange for the drifting bottles.
“Twisty Flower Wands” from Shanghai Koller Foreign Language School:
Twisty wands were used to create preserved flowers and leaves that can be reused for decoration.
“Carbon Trading Marketplace” from Shanghai University:
Comprised four sections, the game asked participants to engage in each section within a limited time to generate “profits” or reduce carbon emissions.
“Trash to Art” from Tangqiao No.1 Elementary School:
Children from Tangqiao No.1 Elementary School created two art pieces with recycled plastic bottles and damaged chairs they collected from the school.
Support from Partners
Shanghai Roots & Shoots’ partners also gathered, not only sharing exciting charity projects and environmental products on-site, but also bringing a touch of coolness to the scorching venue! Special thanks to Yakult and Nestlé for providing refreshing beverages, and special thanks to KYE Yuyi Education for provding the venue.
Annual Awards
The School Coordinator Ms. Sasa He reviewed the splendid moments of Shanghai Roots & Shoots’ signature projects where school groups had greatly contributed to and made impressive achievements.
Shanghai Roots & Shoots also organized monthly activities for the groups, for example, “Tree New Bee” challenges in March, “Peoms for Jane” poetry contest in April, and “Making New Friends” photography sharing in May. These online activities received a warm welcome from the groups.
Ms. Wendy Zhu, the Operations Director of Shanghai Roots & Shoots, presented three annual awards to excellent volunteers, school advisors, and school groups. These awards were given in recognition of their outstanding performance over the past year.
Awardees Ms Li Wei, Ms Wang Xueli, and the representative of Hangzhou Business School shared their personal experiences and stories, bringing new inspiration and ideas to the partners present.
Congratulations!
In the coming year, which will also be its 25th anniversary, Shanghai Roots & Shoots will continue to organize special activities and training for school groups, igniting enthusiasm of the young.
