Healthier Teeth, Brighter Smiles– KidStrong Dental Care Classes
In the first semester of 2014, as usual, the KidStrong program provided dental checkups and treatments to 5th graders of our program’s partner migrant schools. We invited dentists from the Shanghai United Family Hospital (SHU) to give dental care classes to the 5th graders. In these classes, the dentists talked about the functions and structure of teeth as well as the correct methods of flossing and brushing teeth. SHU also donated toothbrushes, toothpaste and dental floss to all of the 5th graders. We thank SHU dentists for their contributions and hope that these classes will teach students good dental hygiene habits that will lead them into living a healthier life.
Food Pyramids and Fishing Games–Fun Nutrition Classes
In June 2014, KidStrong Program and volunteers from Shanghai United International School (SUIS) taught special nutrition classes to the 4thgraders from Shanghai Chouchun Migrant School. In the classes, students learnt about the food pyramid and the importance of having a balanced healthy diet.
Firstly, the teachers taught students what the food pyramid is and how understanding which foods should be eaten in moderation leads to a healthier diet. Then the SUIS volunteers, who had received training before the classes began, led group games of food fishing. Through the game, the students were able to better understand food pyramids in a fun and interactive way.
Besides Shangai Chouchun migrant school, KidStrong volunteers corporate and universities also taught nutrition classes to students from other KidStrong partner schools. We believe that the classes will have a positive impact on students and help them live a healthier lifestyle.
