Organic Garden Project Training

On Sunday, September 25^th, 2011, the staff of Roots and Shoots Shanghai, along with volunteers who came to attend the Organic Garden Project training, headed to BIOFarm Shanghai in Chuansha, Shanghai. There, they received training for the Organic Garden Projects, which were about to begin operation at schools.

First, under the leadership of Roots and Shoots staff, we completed a game called “The Life of Milk”, where the volunteers separated into groups, discussed, and completed an Info graphics explaining the process of milk. The Info graphics explained everything from the production of milk to the drinking of the milk. Volunteers completed the task excellently, with respect to the environment and consideration of the natural cycle of nutrients, which are both important to an Organic Garden.

After that, with the company of BIOFarm staff, volunteers learned the difference between an organic garden and an ordinary garden. They learned that in the chemical-pesticide-free, chemical-fertilizer-free Organic Garden, crops could grow healthily and have their own natural pest-remover.

Following lunch, volunteers experienced for themselves the entire process of farming and learned to tell apart different types of vanilla. Finally, they learned how to make earthworm compost under the guidance of Roots and Shoots staff.

From this activity, we hope that the volunteers got a deeper understanding of food safety issues, grew more concerned with the environment, and will help primary and middle schools with better service at their Organic Garden Projects!
