Clean Water Protects Hope

3M Donates Water Purification Equipment and Engages in Long-Term Water Welfare Aid

On July 26^th, Global 500 Fortunes 3M enterprise came to Dabie Mountain regions and delivered clean water to the students and residents in the remote area. Yangshan Primary School received a set of 3M water purification equipment in order to improve the students’ drinking water conditions.

The donations from 3M included purification equipment and water boiling machines. At the donation event, 3M specialists and the volunteers from R&S – an international teenage education organization established by the world renowned primate scientist Doc. Jane Goodall – gave the students a very informative class regarding water and water drinking.

This aid program of 3M was made possible from the information provided by Shanghai R&S. When 3M came to realize the water problems in Yangshan Primary School, it dispatched specialist group to do on-the-spot investigation and analyze local water. The group detected notably high pollutants in the water sink of the school, and decided immediately to donate a set of water purification equipment. Considering the school’s special conditions, 3M chose a set of products with small volume but high efficiency.

Shanghai R&S manager Li Yuqing said, “We’re very pleased to cooperate with 3M and help improve the living and studying conditions of Yangshan Primary School. R&S has since 2005 become partners with Yangshan village with respect to equipment and tuition aid. However, we believe that the aid should not simply be material; therefore, we also actively carried out a series of volunteering activities, including creating ‘R&S groups’, and organizing a series of environmental educational courses”.

During our long-term contact, we found that the local children are generally displaying patterns of insufficient nutrition intake. Although this is not a notable disease, in the long run it will not do any good to the kids’ growth. The local water drinking conditions caught our attention and we contacted 3M, planning to purchase a set of water purification equipment for the school. When 3M came to this knowledge, it actively cooperated with the water examination and research, and went so far as to donate the equipment. It also arranged specialist to train R&S staffs and the school teachers, so as to ensure that the kids will have safe water. We are very grateful to 3M for their tangible help to China’s remote regions.”

3M China Industrial and Transport Product business unit vice president Xu Jiwei said, “Water safety is the basic right of every citizen and 3M has always been making great efforts in improving the quality of drinking water. Through the experience and investigation in Dabie Mountain regions, we felt by heart that people in remote regions of China only have a vague idea of drinking water. What they need is not a one-time donation; instead they need long-term education and investment. We wish to cooperate more closely with R&S and promote ‘Drinking Water Class’, ‘Paying Attention to Drinking Water Problems of Children of Migrant Workers’ and other meaningful projects. We also appeal to all benevolent social organizations to join and pay attention to the water drinking problems”.

Going deep into Dabie Mountain has just been yet another effort of 3M: After the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, 3M donated 100 sets of water purification equipment to several serious hurt regions, in order to aid drinking water problems; after the catastrophe in Qinghai Yushu, 3M immediately donated 20 sets. This cooperation with R&S is another milestone; 3M will focus on the long-term cooperative relations with remote regions and take the improvement of drinking water conditions in poverty-stricken regions as a continuous investigation project.
