Unveiling Ceremony of the Pudong Foreign Language School Organic Garden
On September 29, 2011 at 4 pm, staff members and volunteers from Shanghai R&S led nine representatives of sponsoring company Qihuadun, to Pudong Foreign Language School to hold an unveiling ceremony of their organic farm.
The farm lay in the south part of campus and was about ten meters squared. There, students planned to plant onions, lettuce, radishes, and crown daisies.
The unveiling ceremony began at approximately 4:15. After a few brief speeches given by the sponsor and the school, the farm was formally unveiled.
Lead by the staff of Qihuadun, students worked in four groups to mix organic soil. The students were all energetic did the job perfectly. They wore gloves, carried tools, and were able to mix the organic and inorganic soil evenly. It was a great start for the work to come.
Afterwards, under the guidance of R&S staff member, students started to sow seeds. We planted the seeds using a drilling method. Although it was not complicated, students were still careful when digging holes and planting the seeds, then covering them with a thin layer of soil. Another group of students job was to get water from the tap nearby.
Since there weren’t enough sprinklers for the whole farm, the students and volunteers made home-made sprinklers using plastic bottles. After successfully watering the seeds, the students moved onto the last step: making a fence for the farm. Students picked up hammers and began hitting the fence pieces into the soil. They took turns doing this and enjoyed themselves quite a bit. When they were done, there were beautiful fences circling the farm.
At 5:15, the unveiling ceremony ended with laughter. This is only the start of our farm, we believe that it will only get better and better, and soon enough, will reward us with a plentiful harvest.
