Fun Sports Day
Sep.20.2015
Amongst the laughter and perspiration of 24 children and 16 volunteers, Roots & Shoots’ “Green Planet” Sports Day came to an end! On Sunday September 13, 24 migrant children and 16 volunteers had a fun sports day – Fight for the Green Planet at Jinqiao Arena Indoor Stadium.
Shanghai Roots & Shoots Think Tank members and volunteers arrived early to get ready for the event. Having set up the venue and learned the game rules by heart, the volunteers led by “Green Superman” engaged themselves in warm-up exercises and ice-breaking games.
At 1 pm, the children from Limin Migrant School arrived. At first, the children were rather shy, sitting quietly while listening to the story. “Once upon a time, there was a beautiful planet guarded by Green Superman. One day, a malicious monster came and cast a spell on the planet, destroying its environment. Just as people became desperate, the Green Superman appeared and fought the monster with all his might.” The children were immediately captivated. Then the host gave them the instructions to help the Green Superman; by winning each game, energy blocks would be achieved to defeat the Demon. The games began!
In the first game, 24 kids and the volunteers were divided into two groups. Without saying anything, they had to line up in the order of their birth dates, and the team that finished first would win. By the time the game was over, everyone was chatting and laughing.
The first of the ball games was the British Lawn-bowls. The volunteers explained the rules to the kids. The team that rolls its ball closest to the target ball earns a point. Everyone watched the ball rolling quietly holding their breath till the results were announced.
Next came the exciting game of dodge ball, which is a very popular game with students. The students participated enthusiastically. Eventually, only a handful of players remained on the court, giving their full attention to where the ball would come from.
The highlight of the day was KT soccer. In a 38.6 m2 area, a total of 8 2 vs 2 competitions were held. Whenever the ball neared a goal, shouts of excitement erupted from the audience. In these young players we saw some real athletic potential! At last, with a powerful kick, the game was drawn to a close.
Two hours flew by. Our little helpers of the Green Superman were able to collect enough energy blocks to defeat the monster. Peace and harmony were restored. During the recess, everyone exchanged gifts and wishes.
The goal of the event was to raise the children’s awareness of their responsibilities for the environment as well as to have some good fun playing sports. Mission accomplished!
