Children Young and Old Celebrate Children’s Day Together

On Wednesday June 1st, 2011, Humin Street’s Jinhu Kindergarten was especially lively, for that day was a special day – Children’s Day, a day just for the kids. Every child got dressed up in their best attire to welcome the holiday just for them

Right after the kids’ lunchtime, a few of us volunteers from Shanghai Dianji University Roots and Shoots “Lun Yue Team” came to the kindergarten to prepare the schools Children’s Day celebrations. There, we locked ourselves in a small room and blew up balloons to put in the classrooms. Soon enough, the entire floor was covered with every color of balloon; the sight of all the colors only made us work harder. In the not-so-large kindergarten, only our busy silhouettes were visible.

A Children’s Day performance was also held that day, which resulted with much laughter. The kindergarten teachers had put a lot of effort into this performance to come up with the excellent shows. The children also worked very hard, and all had performances showing their abilities. Some children recited poetry, some sang songs, and other danced. One relatively old child read a touching thank-you letter to us, and we were especially moved. We were touched, not because of his prose, nor his words, nor because it was such a special day. We were moved because those children had not yet learned to read Chinese characters, but this child had read managed to read a 300-character letter astonishingly fluently.

For the children, the difference between this Children’s Day today and those in previous years could simply be that there were many treats and decorations in the classrooms; to us volunteers this day meant more. This was the first time we’d ever this fantastic of a Children’s Day; we’d always looked forward to having such day. But at the end of the day, we only hope that the children will have a happy and plentiful life.
