Focusing on Vision Health of Migrant Children

One of the most important responsibilities of the KidStrong Program is conducting a vision test for underprivileged children. In October, with the support of oculists from Shanghai Ren’Ai Hospital, KidStrong provided free vision check-ups for 3rd to 5th grader migrant children at Limin, Jinde, Changlin, Shouchun (Pudong District), and Maqiao (Minhang District) Schools.
The oculists offered three onsite services including professional computer optometry, precise optic examination and prescribing eyeglasses for those who need vision correction. As a result, 2,422 students were given pre-emptive eye screening tests in schools; of these, 553 took comprehensive tests and 406 received eyeglasses. In addition, KidStrong held meetings with parents of children who need to wear eyeglasses, encouraging them to work with the students to keep up with the good eye care habits.
Data from the eye check-ups showed that the number of students with complex eye problems is decreasing. The eyesight of some students who wear eyeglasses is improving, several students’ vision has even improved to the point they do not need to wear eyeglasses anymore. KidStrong hopes to provide a crystal clear world for the migrant children to live in.
