Happy Seedling,  Shanghai Weekly, and Laborer’s Children Celebrate National Hand Washing Day Together

December 15 is the International Hand Washing Day. On Friday, December 14, Shanghai R&S’s “Happy Seedling” Program, along with  seven volunteers from the “Shanghai Weekly” reader club went to Limin Primary School in Pudong to celebrate the Hand-washing Day with rural workers’ children.

During the short visit, the seven volunteers took turns to teach children from two third grade classes how to properly wash their hands and protect their eyes. Though the task seems simple, volunteers spent a lot of time and effort in preparation. They showed children the importance of washing hands using games, singing, media support, and even little prizes. They also told the kids when they should wash their hands and taught the “7 steps of hand washing”. To illustrate the importance of protecting their eyes, volunteers had the kids paint with their eyes covered. They also told the kids what they could eat to provide plenty nutrition for their eyes.

The kids of the third grade were energetic and active. Volunteers enjoyed their teaching, but met challenges along the way. For example, during the game “Bacteria Contagion”, one children used chalk powder as bacteria and used the chalk to “infect” others. The kids were so excited that they all screamed “I want bacteria, sir!”

The activity ended just as school let out. All the children rushed to the taps to wash their hands, using the “7 steps of hand washing” they had just learned.
