Farm Tour with Stryker
On August 24, Zheng Chen, Zheng Minying, and I, from Shanghai R&S arrived at BioFarm. We went there to learn and share our knowledge of organic farming with 26 of the Stryker staff. During the afternoon, we traveled around the farm, played a game called “Life of Milk”, fed the earthworms, planted in pots, picked weeds, and collected vegetables. Finally, we realized the difference between organic farms and non-organic farms.
During our tour around the first farm, we set up a small task. We asked everyone to note what makes an organic farm different. With Jane and Dong from Baiouhuan guiding and explaining, we discovered their unique methods of avoiding all sorts of bugs and various creatures, special earth “resting” methods, and professional organic fertilizer. These factors all make the organic farm unique from other farms.
After touring around the farm, we played a game called “Life of Milk” to paint out their own ideal, healthy glass of milk. Through these paintings and explanations, the chief of Shanghai R&S Organic Farm Project taught the concept of organic food.
Afterwards, the staff was split into three groups. One group began fertilizing the earthworms, another planting in pots, and the third pulling weeds. While fertilizing, one of the Stryker staff was surprised by the fertilizing ability of the worms. In the little planting studio, we learned how to choose the correct organic soil, seeds, and how to deal with pests. We all believe pulling weeds is really important for the farm.
It started raining a little at the end of the day, but that did not affect our passion. The farm prepared some food for us and afterwards we made some small purchases. The activity ended on a relaxing note. We are grateful to Baiouhuan Farm for their support.
