Our group developed YES program during the fall semester in Shanghai Songjiang 2nd Experimental Primary School, 5 classes，270 students altogether according to environment protect and natural experience. This activity aimed to enrich students’ activity in their spare time, offer an opportunity to experience nature and promote environmental awareness. Meanwhile, members of our group, playing a role of tutor, have improved teaching ability and strengthen patience and confidence, gained happiness and contentment of being a volunteer.

On Tuesday noon every two weeks during 12:45-13:15, there were 6 classes and each time 3 classes had a lesson. Our group contains 6 members, each class equipped with one tutor presenting and one assistant taking photos, handing out things and keeping order. Before class, 3 tutors would prepared for their class by PPT by means of music, movies, poems, questions and answers, game interaction, handicraft and setting simulation to help students feel the magic of nature and enhance the environmental protecting awareness. After finishing each class, we drew a conclusion.

The total found of our program was 160¥, which contained traffic fare and prize expenses. Thanks to the considerable teacher of the primary school, thanks to the innocent and excited children. Every student learned a lot after class and gained more knowledge of nature, every picture illustrated their imagination. The series of YES lessons taught us how to put ourselves into others’ shoes, and you are a child when you are surrounded by children. Though they will cry or lose their temper at any time, this is the true life without confine. Sometimes people on equal terms will not embarrass each other and realize the original intention.

Here comes our defects. Firstly, lacking of teaching experience and being not tough enough, it’s difficult to keep order during class, maybe it’s essential to form standard rules. Secondly, it’s necessary to enrich boring and dull lessons, enhancing the enjoyment of life. Thirdly, hope Roots & Shoots can provide vividly movies according to lesson’s topic, which will distinguish lesson’s feature and help students become self-absorbed.

Next term we will continuously teach children of grade 3, hoping our tutors can keep order and every student benefits a lot.
