Jul.19.2023

At the end of the semester, the “Dragon Recycling Project-Green Seeds Action”, supported by the Shanghai Municipal Civil Affairs Bureau to involve non-profit organizations in civil governance, completed its environmental education mission for students in five primary and secondary schools in the city. The project comprises three “Green and Fun Classes”, three “Campus Recycling Days”, and a field visit to environmental protection plants.

Here is the review:

Kaiyuan Primary School, Changning District:Due to the impact of the 2022 pandemic, the volunteers conducted lessons on “Where Does the Trash Go” and “Plastic Code” to all Grade 3 and 4 students in the school through the online Tencent meeting. The lesson on “Trash to Treasure” was shown to students as an instructional video. In 2023, the school integrated the lessons into labor education topics, inviting Shanghai Roots & Shoots to give an online class on “Happy Composting” to explain the techniques of using wet waste for home composting and planting.

Tangqiao No.1 Primary School, Pudong New District: From March to May 2023, Shanghai Roots & Shoots completed the “Where Does the Trash Go”, “Plastic Code”, and “Trash to Treasure” lessons in Grade 3 Class 2, and the volunteers instructed the students to create a “Tree of Hope” using old objects. The school highly appreciated the project and invited the Shanghai Roots & Shoots volunteers to instruct the class representatives to create their own artworks, and on World Environment Day, two pieces of artwork, “Environmental Angel” and “The Crying Ocean”,were presented to the whole school.

Shanghai Wei Yu Middle School:From March to May 2023, Shanghai Roots & Shoots completed all three classes in the Root & Shoot Group of Grade 6 Class 9, including “Where Does the Trash Go”, “Plastic Code”, and”Trash to Treasure”. Volunteers led students to use old materials to rejuvenate unused glassware.

Shi Xi Primary School:In April, 2023, a lesson on “Where Does the Trash Go”, “Plastic Code” was taught to all Grade 4 students in the schools “Forest Theatre”, and the third lesson on “Turning waste into treasure” was organized for Grade 4 Class 1.

The Primary School Attached to Shanghai No.1 Normal School:The school, together with Shanghai Roots & Shoots organized a live broadcast on the topic of domestic waste disposal and sustainable living on World Environment Day, which all pupils and teachers in the school watched. On the second day, 11 volunteers organized an “Eco Carnival” for all the pupils form Grade 3 to Grade 5.

From March to May, the volunteer team carried out “Campus Recycling Days” in the five partner schools.396.99 kg of waste was recycled, reducing 224.94 kg carbon dioxide emission caused by landfilling. The recyclables were sent to “S-Bag”, a professional recycling company in Shanghai.

On 28 June, Shanghai Roots & Shoots organized nearly 40 school teachers and students to participate in the field trip to three waste disposal plants including an incineration site for hazardous and medical waste, an incineration site for regular domestic waste and a local sewage works.

This year, the project has recruited young volunteers passionate about environmental protection. They have participated in the training of the project and have given their support to it, which aims to recycle all types of waste on the campus, including paper, plastic bottles, old clothes, electronic waste, stationery, and toiletries, providing systematic and sustainable recycling solutions for these wastes and encouraging students to make changes to protect the environment.
