Coca Cola’s “Antarctica, journey of destination” Selection Comes to an Brilliant End
On the afternoon of January 5th, the 10 finalists of Coca Cola’s “Antarctica, Journey of destination” presented their well-prepared plans. After 3 hours of intense competition, Yuzhou Wang and Siyu Luyang from Shanghai Jiaotong University, and Yating Shen from East China Normal University, became the winners of the competition, and were going to take “Antarctica, Journey of destination” by Coca Cola.
Yuzhou Wang, a sophomore from Shanghai Jiaotong University Michigan Collage, chose “enjoying environmental protection” as his theme. In his opinion, protecting the environment can be entertaining; therefore, he proposed a “fun” way of practicing environmental protection. He argues one should add fun to environmental protection activities in order to draw more attention and participation, thus achieving the goal of: be optimistic and enjoy the beautiful life.
Yu Luyangsi, a freshman from Shanghai Jiaotong University and focusing on environmental science and engineering, chose “Green Smile” as her theme. She explained her interpretation of “be optimistic and enjoy the beautiful life”; that is, if you use an optimistic attitude to do everything possible to protect the environment, you will then be able to have an enormous impact.
Yating Shen, a sophomore from East China Normal University, chose “making waste into treasures, starting from recyclable packaging” as her theme. She claimed that through recycling packaging and using more environment-friendly packaging, a greener earth can be obtained.
Coca Cola’s “Antarctica, journey of destination” Final Selection Starts
Three Winners are Stepping on their Journey to Antarctica
(2011.1.5, Shanghai) Since the New Year, the 10 finalists of Coca Cola’s “Antarctica, Journey of destination” have gathered in Shanghai’s Coca Cola China headquarters to explain their understanding of the four themes: “positive and healthy lifestyle”, “sustainable packaging”, “climate protection”, and “water resources management”, and to show their comprehension of the concept: “Be optimistic and enjoy the beautiful life”. The contestants are to compete for the three winning placements of the once-in-a-lifetime “Antarctica, Journey of Destination”.
On December 6th, the Coca Cola’s “Antarctica, Journey of Destination” selection took place. From then until December 18th, less than 2 weeks, more than 3,000 university students logged into and viewed the official website www.cocacolalivepositivelycom, and more than 600 students in Shanghai registered and participated in the competition. In the second phase, the candidates who passed the selection extended and revised the content and structure of the work they had already submitted. They then spread ideas and concepts of their work to influence at least ten other people. The final work and its influence was then uploaded to the official website to be assessed, and the judging committee selected ten candidates for the final face-to-face competition.
Madame Xujin, the chief manager of the Coca Cola China “Be optimistic and enjoy the beautiful life” project, along with Chen, the general manager of Coca Cola China public and legal affairs, Miss Yan Su, the chief manager of Shanghai R&S Teenager Activity Center, Miss Shengxi Zhong and Elite of Shanghai, and Mr. Qiangying Ren, the chief executive of the economic department of Wenhui Newpaper, will be the judges for the final. The ten students will present their plans; by considering and comparing the relevance to themes, generalizability, creativity of the plans, and the impromptu responses of the candidates, the judges will grade each of them. Afterwards, the ten candidates will judge one another; each of them has the right to vote for another candidate other than him/herself based on whom they believe is the most impressive. Finally, based on the results of the grades of the judges and the mutual evaluation, three students will be selected as the winners for the project and will commence on their journey to the Antarctica.
In the final, Madame Chen will also award the ten finalists certificates as ambassadors of the “Optimistic and beautiful lifestyle”. Then, she will give each finalist flags of “Optimistic and beautiful lifestyle”, and ask them to take the flags to Antarctica to, together with Coca Cola, strive for the sustainable development of Earth.
As one of the major projects under the Coca Cola’s theme: “optimistic and beautiful lifestyle”, the “Journey of Destination” seeks to draw more Chinese youth to protect the environment, and to complete unusual tasks with adventurers around the world. At the same time, Coca Cola fulfills the promises it makes on protection of water resources, climate, and the environment. As an environmental protection project, the crew of this journey will carry out the concept of “optimistic and beautiful lifestyle” with enthusiasm for protecting the Earth to face new challenges on the southeast end of the globe. They will investigate in person the impact that climate change has had on the environment, humans, and animals. This journey will provide them with the chance to learn more about the relationship between sustainable development and a prosperous life, hence dedicating themselves more actively into the protection campaign.
The declaration of a sustainable development “optimistic and beautiful lifestyle” is a serious promise made by Coca Cola China in April this year to create a positive influence on the world. By advocating for redesigning work and lifestyle, Coca Cola infuses the concept of sustainability into every facet of the company. The explicit measures include creating diverse selection of drinks, promoting a positive and healthy lifestyle, efficient water resources management, energy management, climate protection, use of sustainable packaging, caring for communal development, and creating a safe and open working environment for the employees. With these measures, Coca Cola is able to practice its social responsibility and promote the sustainable development of economy, community and environment.
