On February 19, 2011, 350 Shanghai Girl Scouts and parent volunteers from eight international schools in Shanghai and Suzhou gathered together at Concordia International School Shanghai for the annual celebration of World Thinking Day.

World Thinking Day is a global event for Girl Scouts all around the world in which they are asked to think about how they can make the biggest impact on our world. This year, scouts worked on activities together that address the UN Millennium Development Goals such as ending global poverty and hunger, providing access to education and empowering girls and women. Moreover, World Thinking Day gives girls a chance to celebrate international friendships, and serves as a reminder that the Girl Scouts in Shanghai is a part of a global community, with Girl Scouts groups established in nearly 150 countries.

While the Girl Scouts had fun making new friends and participating in interesting activities, they also took away important lessons on World Thinking Day. When asked about highlights from World Thinking Day, one Girl Scout from Concordia responded, “I like swapping (pins). I like to meet up with new friends and exchange those SWAPS that we made ourselves. But, my favorite activity was when we were trying to write in dirt and learned about poor children who have to write on the dirt in school. I think we are so lucky to study in classrooms.” Another scout mentioned, “I was very impressed with the video I watched. It’s about people in Indonesia who have to count on people from other countries to drop in food by airplanes. I think when I grow up I will try to go on the plane and help them with dropping food. For now, I won’t waste food, eat all the food I have on my plate and be thankful for what I have.”

Also for this year’s World Thinking Day, the Girl Scouts organized an activity with Shanghai Roots & Shoots’ Million Tree Project (MTP). The scouts set a goal to raise money to plant 500 trees (RMB 12,500) to send Senior Scout, Bonnie Dalaroy, to Inner Mongolia to go tree planting this April. At the end of the event, the scouts and their parents successfully surpassed this target and raised money to plant over 830 trees! In this upcoming spring, Bonnie will represent Shanghai Girl Scouts in Inner Mongolia and plant trees with MTP to help make the world a better place.

Girl Scouts is a US-based non-profit organization dedicated to building character and skills for success among girls. Founded in 1912, its organization has over 10,000 girls and adult members in 145 countries worldwide. The Girl Scouts in Shanghai has representation in eight international schools.
