Summary Of The September Student’s Meeting, 2015

The September students meeting of Shanghai Roots & Shoots (R&S) came to an end. On September 25th, 2015 at 6:30 PM, R&S held its September meeting at Wu Ding Fang which is located at the 116 Wuding Road, Jingan district. About 107 students from 44 different schools attended this meeting.

The main contents of this meeting included:

[Program News]

Sasa He, the newly-appointed person in charge of the YES Program coordination, introduced and updated the program on-going movements for this year. At the same time, Sasa also recruited volunteers on-site and encouraged the student leaders’ participation in volunteering as YES Mentors who would spend more spare time to bring fun and talents into the environmental courses for the primary and secondary school students.

After that, Tianli Qiao, responsible for the MTP presented the success of the “Citigroup Global Volunteer Day” where 4609 trees were raised and “Challenge Limit for 48 Hours” which was an internal campaign among Ali staff. On June 13th, the Citigroup Global Volunteer Day, fund was raised through talent show, MTP merchandises, on-site voting and donation. During the 48-hour challenge on September 9 and 10, the Alibaba staff have donated 2029 trees for the deserted region Inner Mongolia. However, this was not the end of the story, the staff are continuously donating trees to expend the Alibaba forest which will be planted in spring 2016. [Latest News]

2015 China Roots & Shoots Festival was officially launched recently, of which the theme is ’Green City, Multicolor Relay’. Xia Xiao, school coordinator, introduced the details of the event for the group members. This event is jointly organized by Roots 7 Shoots Beijing, Shanghai and Chengdu offices, leading more than 700 Roots & Shoots groups all over China to complete two tasks including:

  • One, coloring the hometown:

Each group may ask the school coordinator the coloring template to color for his hometown or city; or ask for the capital profile within the outline to create their own dream of a green city.

  • Two, witnessing three changes together:

Write “The change that I saw, I made and I expect” on the board (or any other creative objects, such as walls, grass, etc.), take a photo or video and send it to us. Secondly, the 2015 “Junk Thrown Fun” Competition will start in Shanghai. This competition is a campus charity project which is organized by the Wrigley Foundation and co-sponsored by the China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation. Their aim is to make fashionable “transfer station” for portable garbage and increase public awareness of handling garbage in a proper way so that “the world would have a big difference.” Since 2013, this project has been carried out in different colleges and universities, which obtained support and love from teachers and students. Finally, ShiYou Qiu, Think-tank member and the leadership of the Sports Day, reviewed this event.

The fun sports day aimed to create a happy afternoon for the migrant students of the KidStrong project and to provide some new ball games in order to play with them. The event had a great atmosphere and everyone not only was involved, but also enjoy in this event.

Speak of the R&S Think-tank, it is a group of teenagers and young adults aging from 16 to 35, coming from high schools, universities, graduate schools and all walks of life. Every Think-tank member has devotion on environmental protection and public welfare. The Think-tank plan and organize the environmental or animal protection salons and other R&S events as well. For example, the Adoption Day in May 2015 and the Sports Day that mentioned above both hit a great success.
