Event Details:

Event Goal: To inform more students current situations of global wastes and therefore to encourage them to get involved.

Participants: Students who have no concept or alertness on wastes

How: To arrest everybody’s attention, we played a relaxing cartoon, bringing about several facts and problems on garbage issues. Then we presented a documentary involving thrilling scenes of global wastes, along with a news report on Shanghai’s way to deal with wastes in order to involve students in garbage problems around themselves.

Part I: Romance of Miss Baggy
The opening movie is an excellent Chinese cartoon depicting the romance story of Miss Baggy( a plastic bag) and a paper coffee cup. They fell in love with each other but their love couldn’t last long, for it takes Miss Baggy thousands of years to degrade. The cartoonic and romantic story alleviates the usually sharp garbage problems and makes the topic more illuminating. After the movie ends, we used some slide shows to discuss facts on degradation.

Part II: Addicted to Plastic
After an inspiring opening-up, we decided to show some shocking scenes and some knowledge that could never been found in books. In the popular documentary on plastic problems, Addicted to plastic, the producer Ian Connacher explores the effects of irresponsible plastic application on the global environment. We played an excerpt on the largest trash dump in the world, the Great Pacific garbage patch, with shocking anatomies on fish and albatross and the fact that the ratio of plastic particles and plankton has reached 10 to 1.

Part III: News clip: Shanghai expanded the biggest trash dunp in Asia, and residents could hardly bear the odor.
This report on current Shanghai garbage problems describes the Laogang Trash Dump located in the very Pudong New District where the school stands. Students felt that garbage problem is not a faraway trifle but a real dilemma for residents in Laogang and neighboring areas. No matter for environmental friendliness or for the sake of citizens of the same city, we should pay attention to garbage problems and support concerning acts.
