Dragon Recycling|ONECONNECT Volunteers Helped Communities Recycle

Apr.1.2021

On 27 March 2021, with the spring in the air, 23 volunteers from OneConnect and 20 volunteers from Shanghai Roots & Shoots together held OneConnect Volunteer Service Day in the Xinchang, Chengxing, Shuntian Cun and Yunzhong neighbourhood committees, located in the subdistrict of E. Nanjing Road.

This Volunteer Service Day takes “the recycling of the old materials” as the theme and promotes the exchange of spare items. Volunteers went inside the neighbourhoods and the residents exchanged old articles at home for daily necessities with them. Volunteers from OneConnect also mobilised their families to participate together. The children engaged in publication and record-taking, proactively introduced the activities to the residents, while the parents were responsible for organising and packing the recycling bags. All the people made an effort in serving the community.

With the concerted efforts of the volunteers, a total of 626 pieces (equivalent to about 280 kg) of used clothes and 82.36 kg of recyclables (newspapers, plastic bottles, used small appliances etc.) were collected in the four communities. The recycled items will also be sent to formal recycling organisations such as Sbag and Lvsefang for corresponding resource regeneration.

Recycling is just a tiny behaviour, but neighbourhood recycling movement offers more opportunities for the volunteers to spread appropriate recycling knowledge and propagate the concept of Zero Waste. The Dragon recycling project of Shanghai Roots & Shoots will concentrate more strengths of youth volunteers to promote the reduction of waste in schools and neighbourhood.
