Dr. Jane Goodall and New Perception of Chimpanzees

81 years ago, on the south coast of England, Bournemouth, a little girl by the name of Jane Goodall came to this world. Passionate for animals and nature, Jane received a stuffed chimpanzee from her parents on her second birthday, which she cherished throughout her entire childhood. After graduating from secondary school, Jane worked hard to save up enough money for a trip to Africa. At the age of 26, she arrived at the unknown and mysterious continent of Africa in pursuit of her childhood dream to live with animals. Her mentor, famed primatologist Louis Leakey sent her to study the wild chimpanzees in Gombe, Tanzania, which turned out to be the beginning of Jane’s life-long journey dedicated to scientific research and environmental conservation.

In 1977, Jane founded the Jane Goodall Institute, for the purpose of advocating wild animal conservation and environmental education.. Later in 1984, Jane Goodall established a sanctuary and Chimpanzoo. The santuary served as a home for illegally smuggled chimpanzees and later became the world’s largest primate research center.

In the past few years, Dr. Jane was awarded numerous honors for her contributions to animal conservation and environmental education. In 1989, she received the Encyclopedia Britannica Award for Excellence on the Dissemination of Learning for the Benefit of Mankind. Later in 2002, Jane was named the United Nations “Messenger of Peace”, and in 2004, was made a Dame of the British Empire.

Roots & Shoots Festival 2015

The three offices joined hands in celebrating the Roots & Shoots Festival launched on World Peace Day, September 21st. Over the period of two months, Roots & Shoots groups will paint their green dreams and pass them on to fellow students in a different city.

Every province will be represented in one giant map of China. The Roots & Shoots groups are responsible for including elements of plants and animals unique to their home provinces in the artwork of the map to reflect the biodiversity of China. The map blueprint started its journey from Shanghai and will draw the relay a close in Beijing.

Get involved with Roots & Shoots and make a difference. Together we can create a greener environment and a better future for all living things!
