Who is the 2010 Planting Expert?

Are you an expert in environmental protection? Do you have creative, new ideas to protect nature? Do you want to know how to compensate for personal carbon emission? In response to the green EXPO—the concept of “City Makes Life Better”—high schools in Shanghai took an active part in the “planting experts” fund-raising competition. With the influence of R&S teams in campus, various activities and groups were formed to help promote the idea of economic and green lifestyles.  Some of these include: creative sales, community volunteer work, publicizing, lectures on low-carbon lifestyle, and the “wishing tree” fund-raising activity. Needless to say, all activities achieved good results.

The Million Tree Project, started by the Shanghai R&S office, seeks to improve the natural and social environment of the Kerchin area of Inner Mongolia. Planting trees not only resists wind and solidifies the ground, but also produces an enormous amount of oxygen, thus reducing CO2 emissions. The volunteers of R&S also hold classes and lectures to educate local students and residents, drawing a wider public to actively participate in planting and nurturing the trees. Come help us fight global warming!

On the afternoon of January 23th, 2011, R&S held the 2010 Shanghai R&S Reciprocal Banquet for Fund-raising in Mesa Restaurant. More than twenty high schools and universities attended, and donated more than 58,000 yuan altogether, a number enough to buy 2,320 trees! They helped make the banquet one of the most successful R&S has ever had! Based on their amount of donations, each school was ranked and received certificates and different gifts. For example, Nanjing Foreign Language School and Jiangsu Tianyi School raised 408 and 403 trees, respectively, winning them the title of  “planting experts”. Meanwhile, each school got two quotas for planting trees in Inner Mongolia. Through playing games and sharing experience, the teams got to know each other better, and the students made new friends. We believe that in the near future, their achievements will be even greater.

Special thanks goes to the support from Mesa Restaurant who sponsored the banquet, and Yve Rocher Company who sponsored gifts. Further thanks goes to the teachers and students who competed and worked in their spare time, it is you who overcame all sorts of difficulties with passion, enthusiasm, and determined beliefs. With your support, the future of environmental protection work in China looks even brighter.
