YES Cafe 7: Happy Halloween News

On Oct 28th, before the Halloween, 30 volunteers of R&S were sent to the Ocean Building to make jack-o-lanterns with the workers there. After a brief introduction, people started to make their jack-o-lanterns under the guidance of R&S volunteers. First, they drew a circle on the top of the pumpkin, then carved and hollowed out the pumpkin through circle they drew.

Then everyone’s imagination was put into practice. All the seeds and insides were taken out so that the pumpkins could easily be carved later. This step proved to be pretty hard. While cleaning out the pumpkins, each employee had to take breaks before continuing again.

A few minutes later, everyones pumpkins were hallow. Everyone sketched out eyes,  nose, and mouth outlines on their pumpkin, then used a knife to carve a face into the pumpkin. This way, the light inside the pumpkin could shine through the carved features. The instructions for the jack-o-lantern sound simple, but the execution was actually quite hard. Just from not being careful, one can easily ruin their design.

Soon after, the jack-o-lanterns were complete.  Lights were put in the center of each pumpkin and we took a photo to remember the moment. From just a little bit of candlelight, the light from the pumpkins shone through the black night. The memories of this Halloween night were embedded in our hearts for a long time to come…
