2013 YES Training in Xi’An

May.8.2013

May 8th 2013, The Eco Club of the Northwest University gave the first lesson on recycling in Xiangyu Elementary School.

The kids were excited upon the arrival of the volunteers at the multimedia classroom on the third floor of their campus building. After they had settled down, the class began.

The kids were lively and sometimes a bit too active throughout the class, due to the fact that they were first and second graders. It was their teacher Zhujun Wang that was able to keep them quiet.

During the class, the volunteer teacher had four students on stage to introduce the use of 4 different trash bins- kitchen wastes, recyclables, toxic substances and unrecyclable wastes. Then the kids were given cards representing different kinds of trash for them to cast into the four categories. Most kids showed a good understanding of the classification process. Those kids who gave the wrong answers were corrected immediately. Wang showed the kids a video on recycling which stressed the importance of recycling.

The kids as well as the volunteers benefited a great deal from this class, which kicked off the series of environmental lessons that the volunteers would deliver throughout the semester.
