EVENT DETAILS:

This semester, we started a recycling program at school. According to our observations, we found that large amounts of waste paper is being generated on campus; many students tend to ball this “resource” and throw it into the rubbish bin, which makes us feel pity. At the same time, our survey found that the batteries in bins for used batteries in school are unaccounted for, and they are not collected regularly. Therefore, our project is to start a collection of waste paper, waste batteries and waste drugs.

By the end of April, we decided to utilize the opportunity of the campus club festival in order to start our recycling activities. First, our members planned for it. Originally, we proposed the use of multimedia equipment, but due to space limitations, it was  not feasible. On the day, each team member and temporary volunteers took responsibility for guarding our booth in batches. In this project, our team members also actively cooperated with the school‘s meteorology club, temporary volunteers are mostly members of it. Because our booth was placed in a partial place, members suspended the “Roots & Shoots” Green Lantern with words, began to actively promote, and patiently explain what we were doing to everyone that did not know about us. The aim was to attract as many students as possible. During the festival, we focused on recycling bottles, waste paper, waste batteries and expired drugs. The students who rendered the recyclable materials were rewarded small gifts. Because of the pre-publicity, there were many students, prepared and actively involved, who brought waste items. We also tried to publicize our project and, more importantly, our idea, to other students, which was our original goal.

The recycling project also includes long-term plans for the future. This semester, we began to consider the establishment of a fixed blueprint of setting recycling bins in every room, including the offices. The plan referred to other schools’ successful projects. We contacted a company and collected the appropriate waste paper. The money we get form offering waste paper to this company will be donated to the tree planting fund. Then the experimental stage started in June. We placed bins made of metal wires for recycling waste paper in two pilot classes. The plan was supported by teachers and students of the pilot classes. Currently, the plan is still in progress, we associated with the school’s teachers to discuss the future methods of operation and ways of maintaining this.

At regular meetings every Thursday, the volunteer of Yes Project, as well as our team instructor, Jay, discuss the recovery project with us; he inspired us the most about the advertisement of environmental projects. After konwing our plan, he showed us the various styles of advertising, and also taught us about things such as Xiaomi’s “fans marketing,” and showed us a number of public projects’ publicity. We have learned that different ways of publicity to audiences bring different psychological effects.

Jay also showed us some projects simillar to our project or topic of publicity and it is the style and manner that matters most, determining whether or not the idea is accepted or understood by people. For environmental protection, we should pay attention to whether ot not the project will be widely accepted and supported, as well as the psychological ability to persuade people so that the ideas are clearly understood and accepted. These sometimes play a key role in the success of such projects.
