SUMMARY OF THE FEBRUARY STUDENT’S MEETING, 2017

The February students meeting of Shanghai Roots & Shoots (SRS) came to an end. On February 24th, 2017 at 7:00 PM, SRS held its February meeting at EF Education which is located at No. 258 Tongren Road, Jingan District. About 57 students from 17 universities and 21 high schools attended this meeting.

【Program News】

1.MTP

Hanlong Chen, responsible for the MTP introduced the achievement of MTP. In ten years, MTP and numerous sponsors have planted 2,000,900 trees – this area is about 2,500 standard football fields. He hoped that more people can be involved in this project, and presented the recruiting information for internship and volunteer as below.

2.YES

Sasa He, the YES Program Coordinator, recruited volunteers on-site and encouraged more groups’ participation in volunteering as YES Mentors who would spend one weekday every week to bring fun and talents into the environmental courses for the primary and secondary school students. Also, volunteers can join YES partys, and communicate in a relax atmosphere. Excellent volunteers have more chance to join YES summer camp, experiencing MTP in Inner Mongolia or Ningxia.

3.OG

Ben Xie, the Organic Garden Program Coordinator, introduced the development history of this program and summarized the kinds of schools which participated in 2016. He put forward expectations that groups can contact more with SRS, so as to provide helps and learn their ideas. He also issued seed packages of new semester on-site to groups, hoping they can get harvest at the end of semester.

4.KidStrong

Becky Ren, Kidstrong Program Coordinator, introduced the current schools involved in the program, the mainly problems children met and the specific activities at present. She presented the recruitment of volunteers for photographer, also welcomed all students who were interested in the program.

5.Hme of Hope

Xian Liu, Home of Hope Program Director, announced the starting of Colorectal Cancer Patient Care Program in 2016 —— CRC Home of Hope WeChat page (Qr code is as follows). Two short videos were shown to let all learn about CRC.

6.Eco Office

Frederick Zhang, Admin Specialist, introduced Eco Office Program, the program objectives and the program impact. He presented the recruitment of internship and volunteer, for details:

【Membership Guide】

In 2017, SRS started to use the new Membership Guide. Group leader can get the new guide from the school coordinator Xia Xiao or Ting Chen, and have a  re-registration.

New Membership Guide includes:

  • basic information
  • updated information
  • training records
  • record of participating in meeting
  • activity reports

Groups need to complete and update the basic information, and record when they attend the meeting. Every semester groups also need to hold activities at least twice and submit activity reports and must submit  semester summary at the end of semester.

SRS will have annual assessment of the guide every year in June; Excellent groups and programs will have the chance to win activity fund and reward.

【2017 Campus Talk】

Shanghai Roots & Shoots will carry out Campus Talk Activity surrounding the leadership, and invite outstanding supervisors to do effective and distinctive lectures. Through introducing environmental programs of R&S, we let students learn more about environmental problems around us, also make a good foundation for them to carry out various activities, and improve students’ comprehensive capacity, so that more young man can keep on being active in environmental protection, helping the poor, education and various volunteer activities. The goal is:“Teens influence teens, teens motivate teens, and teens change teens”.

Time and Place:

Guest Lecturer:

  • Kai Wang, Million Tree Project Regional Manager

Staying in Inner Mongolia, planting trees, he is lonely, but also happy.

Working on the edge of Kerqin Sand Land, he manages the forest of MTP. How to do environmental education at local? How to lead young people to work? How to keep the survival rate of plants…… He will share all his experiences.

  • Tianli Qiao, Million Tree Project Director

How to make 2,000,000 trees grow? She will tell you the answer.

How to make commonweal programs have a sustainable development? How to communicate and fundraise with the top hundred corporations? She will share successful case with you.

  • Hanlong Chen, Million Tree Project Coordinator

How can MTP recover the diversity of creatures? How can high-tech help the forestry? How to plant trees reasonably? Interactive games on-site let you experience forest design.

  • Rebecca Zheng, YES Program Director

She has written dozens of books about environmental education, and has carried out environmental class in many schools in Shanghai, Suzhou, Beijing and so on. She can teach you how to distinguish plants and animals, and develop participative class.

  • Ben Xie, Organic Garden Program Coordinator

How to set up your own organic garden in campus? How to grow vegetables in organic way? Let him lead you experience the fun of harvest. Do you know what is real healthy food? Do you concern about the nutrition and health? Let’s make life more organic and healthier.

【Youth Leadership Council】

Highlights of the Last Year:

  1. CLOTHING RECYCLING DRIVE

The new year of 2017 started with a clothing recycling party organized by SRS Youth Leadership Council at the Sun Moon Light Center during 7-8 January. The recycling project was initiated by a bunch of young people to raise the public awareness for greener fashion style and lower their carbon emission by donating unused clothes.

The recycling drive lasted for two days with three interactive activities for public participation. This two-day event collected 33 boxes of garments, bags and accessories, adding up to 1,530 pieces, which could reduce about 10,710 kg of CO2 emission. All qualified clothes will be donated to Buy42, supporting the disabled communities. All proceeds from the Buy42 booth at the site will be donated to Shanghai Roots & Shoots’ Million Tree Project, to plant bushes in Ningxia in fighting against desertification.

  1. SOUND OF NATURE

On the afternoon of June 5th 2016, hundreds of people gathered together at On Stage to celebrate the World Environment Day with Shanghai Roots & Shoots. In the beats of the warm-up music, the “Sound of Nature” Folk Song Concert officially began.

Singers and bands from 7 different universities in Shanghai and several famous local folk musicians presented a 3-hour-long brilliant concert. Everyone in the audience contributed two saplings by purchasing the concert ticket. The audience applauded the wonderful performances of the bands. Moreover, lots of donated trees on site to show their support for Roots & Shoots and care for the environment.

Upcoming Events:

This year Youth Leadership Council will hold two volunteer volunteer gathering.

  1. Rugby women’s gathering:We will invite professional coach rugby clubs to bring training about rugby ti female volunteers.
  2. Enterprise visits:We will guide university students to visit well-known enterprises and learn enterprise culture.

【Intercollegiate Exchange】

Theme:  “Exploration · Railway Garden”——Intercollegiate Exchange

Content:Professional tutors lead students to find out something special in the city. They can make green map by themselves, and learn the design of Permaculture.
