Youth Leadership Council |Training For New Members

Apr.27.2015

On the morning of April 25, 2015, the first training for new members of Shanghai Roots & Shoots Think-tank officially began. Twenty members in total were in attendance, both old and new.  The member recruitment of this year included people of various age groups, including high school students, university students, and even office workers committed to humanitarian work. The age gap of the participants not only encouraged the Think-tank into becoming more inclusive, but also prompted them to make the elements of the Think Tank more diverse.

The training session began with an ice-breaking game, led by experienced member, Zhang Min. With a pleasant and relaxing atmosphere, old and new members, alike, were quickly able to form relationship with each other.

After the game, the administrator of the Think Tank, Xiao Xia, made a detailed introduction of Shanghai Roots & Shoots, in which she introduced the founder, Jane Goodall, as well as Roots & Shoots’ history, concept, and projects. On top of this, she also introduced the definition, function, and organizational structure of the Think Tank.

Afterwards, Wendy, another administrator of the Think Tank, gave the members a basic training lesson. The lessons she taught seemed very simple, but were ones that are often overlooked.

Then, guided by older members, new members were divided into five groups, and were asked to perform exercises that combined the public speaking skills and what they had just learned along with knowledge of the Shanghai Roots & Shoots projects.

Finally, the secretary general of Think Tank, Ni Wei, announced the 2015 Think Tank plan. 2014 member Wu Shuang introduced the launch of “Dog Adoption Day” planned for May 9th.

To assist with the organization outlook of Shanghai Roots & Shoots, the Think-tank members organized volunteer exercises and conducted organization management. The Think Tank represented the typical teamwork style of Shanghai Roots & Shoots volunteers, which is one of their main development strategies. The goal of the Think Tank was: “Teens influence teens, teens motivate teens, and teens change teens”. These platforms of creativity and practice are created in order to let youth volunteers discover their own potential, increase their sense of responsibility for society, and promote their internal strength.

From 2010 to 2015, Think Tank has already produced more than 40 outstanding volunteer leaders, who at every Roots & Shoots project or activity, succeed in displaying their level of impact.
