Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia, A Lecture Report
On May 28, members of Roots & Shoots CML Home of Hopes Project arrived at Ruijin Hospital’s Kejiao Building where they attended a lecture on Chronic Myelogenous leukemia (CML).
There were around 50 patients with CML who attended. The lecture began with Dr. Aihua Wang introducing some basic knowledge on the medicine taken for CML, explaining how patients should examine and assess their conditions before they commit to a medication. In addition, Dr. Wang outlined the effects as well as side effects of Imatinib treatment of CML, and explained how it should be taken for most effect results. During her lecture, Dr. Wang talked about her own experiences on examining CML patients, providing the patients in the audience with many suggestions and advice.
Dr. Li Zhou then introduced a new type of oncological treatment called Nilotinib. There are relatively few patients who have taken this type of drug. Dr. Zhou spent some time explaining the differences between the two drugs and how Nilotinib eliminates some side effects which cannot be avoided with Imatinib. Finally, Dr. Zhou strongly advised all the patients to follow their doctors instructions when taking the medicine.
The lecture was very informative to the patients in the audience, and helped increase their confidence in fighting this terrible illness.
